The tale of how Counter-Strike’s death spiral was reversed is complicated, and many of the pro players and event organizers who lived through it will all have a different take on how their fortunes were reversed. A confluence of circumstances, both to do with the game itself and with the world of esports in general, have all contributed to this reversal of fate.Beyond their direct support of the competitive community, Valve has also made a big effort to make CS:GO a worthy game to be played competitively in the first place. Smith remarks that “Valve [has taken] all our criticism to heart ... they understand that our complaints about gameplay issues fix the game for everybody, whether it’s map stuff or gun stuff, and they’ve started patching stuff and fixing stuff on a very regular basis. The game that came out a couple years ago is not the game we’re playing now, and that’s amazingly cool.”Speaking of pro teams, again on Reddit poster FalZen noticed that Team Question Mark player Dupreeh posted that he was signing the team to a new sponsor today. It's yet to be announced, but a further bit of sleuthing points out that Team Secret, of Dota fame, have recently changed their Twitter handle from a Dota-specific one to the more general @teamsecret and were recently varified.
Keven “AZK” LarivièreGamasutra recently sat down to play some CS:GO with Le, and chat about his thoughts on Counter Strike and the industry in general. Here's Le in his own words.I was working with Valve for about five years, and I left at the end of 2006. I started a new game called Tactical Intervention. I guess a lot of people wonder why I left Valve -- everyone wants to work at Valve, right? I think at the time, they were at the stage where there wasn't a lot of push towards a new Counter Strike game. At the time they were working on Team Fortress 2, and I felt that I wanted to focus more on a game that was similar to CS.Hopefully "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" would be able to keep this record when Steam launches is new streaming device Steam Link and the accompanying Steam Controller next month. Currently the hardware is not compatible with Mac and Steam is working to fix this. On the other hand, to check how Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with respect to the number of concurrent players at the moment you may go to Steam & Game Stats. Here is another great news for all "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" fans: the game is now integrated with plays.tv, which is an online service that lets the user easily share game play moments. To commemorate the integration, plays.tv is holding a video contest where they are giving away one of the most sought after CS:GO weapon skins, the AWP Dragon Lore, to four lucky individuals. And as stated in the website blog, "the contest runs from 10/14/2015 to 11/4/2015" and "only videos created within the contest dates are eligible."
Yet… so is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. It’s the second most played game on Steam after Dota 2, and it comes from a series with a history of being one of the biggest FPS in eSports. Counter-Strike has always been huge and was huge before Dota 2 was even a thing. So where is its International? Why isn’t Valve pushing that as much as Dota 2 when it has been shown that the idea of supporting the competitive community comes with a huge financial benefit? This fits in with Valve’s corporate structure of little clusters of people floating between products, with management being more hands-off than in other companies. While the idea does make sense, it feels weird to me that Valve is using its second biggest game as a test bed for just not doing anything and seeing what happens.Passive AWPing best works at corners where you have the option of retreating behind solid cover, where you can protect yourself until the AWP is ready to fire again (e.g. the box at the back corner of B site on de_dust2). Passive players only have to worry about one angle, avoiding getting flashed or smoked out of their roost, and hitting the shot. But if you crane your neck around the massive conga line of people who have discovered Global Offensive, you’ll remember that, oh right, it was born as a port—partly meant to put Counter-Strike onto the previous generation of consoles before the end of their lifespan. When Valve and Hidden Path brought CS:GO to PAX in 2011 they demoed it exclusively on Xbox 360 and talked up, no joke, cross-platform play between PC and PS3 as a major feature (which was cut before release).A year later, I couldn’t be happier with my setup. If I can help it, I won't play PC games in a chair at home again. Here’s what I’ve learned after more than 12 months of playing PC games upright.Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the massively popular first-person shooter from Valve, receives a fresh Operation Vanguard event today, which comes with a massive patch filled with new maps, special skins, and plenty of improvements to game modes like Arms Race or Demolition. The ESEA has also issued bans against the seven players in question, saying that while the bans are currently set for one year, it reserves the right to extend them indefinitely. It noted that it has since implemented its own policy explicitly forbidding players, managers, and sponsors from betting on their own matches, adding, "We strongly encourage all organizations, regardless of their affiliation with Valve, to mirror and enforce these bans so that a clear message is sent—there is no place for match fixing in professional gaming."
Team composition is important. Make sure you’re looking around and seeing what your team is up to before you buy a gun. If someone has an AWP already, you generally don’t need a second one (there are exceptions to this, which you will learn, but play it safe). If a teammate has no money and you have enough for multiple guns, buy two and drop one for them. As mentioned above, if your team is broke, don’t buy out of sync with them - wait for them to save for a round and then buy with them. It’s a team game, play accordingly.Game streaming has grown to become a huge part of the Internet. It's so big that Amazon and Google were both looking to spend big bucks to acquire top game streaming website Twitch. The deal eventually went to Amazon, which spent $970 million dollars for the service. That amount may seem odd for people who aren't familiar with the service, but Twitch's traffic is huge. In fact, Twitch gaming streams generate more traffic than HBO Go.
A few times a year, there’s also major CS:GO tournaments, which are extra useful to watch as a new player, as the matches are generally commentated by people who are very familiar with the finer points of CS strategy.Launched in January 2015, OPSkins Group Inc. intended to take advantage of the growing demand for a safe way to trade skins for money. The site partnered with BitPay in August last year and since then it has seen an ever-increasing demand for bitcoin transactions. Not long after launching, OPSkins saw a demand for bitcoin payments for CS:GO virtual items. This is not an uncommon thing nowadays for virtual item trades Team Fortress 2 trading site Dispenser.tf provides bitcoin trades. On the other side of legitimacy, Star Trek Online “gold seller” Divine Treasury accepts bitcoins for in game items (although this is against the terms of service).Games of chance, which betting using these CSGO websites, is indeed illegal in most of the US. It’s legalized though regulated in Delaware, New Jersey and Nevada. And even then, sites must be properly licensed to operate in those states. Even though you’re betting things that are indirectly worth money, it might not necessarily be legal in your particular jurisdiction. That, and underage gambling of any sort, for real money or not, is not legal at all.It goes a little something like this: Weapons can be acquired through playing the game, paying to open "weapons cases," buying them through the marketplace, or trading with other Steam users. The amount that people are paying for weapons determines weapons' value, and special graphs associated with each weapon show you at a glance how much you can expect to buy or sell them each for.Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the massively popular first-person shooter from Valve, receives a fresh Operation Vanguard event today, which comes with a massive patch filled with new maps, special skins, and plenty of improvements to game modes like Arms Race or Demolition. The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament at ESL One Katowice 2015 runs from March 12-15, and features a $250,000 prize pool. You may remember CS:GO's M4A4: Howl as one of the most expensive weapon skins available for the game. Today, Valve announced their receipt of a DMCA takedown notice, stating that both the skin and the Howling Dawn community sticker were not the original work of the item's Steam Workshop contributors. "This matter is extremely serious," Valve wrote in a post to the CS:GO community , "and we have taken appropriate action to resolve it."

For veterans of the franchise, it offered a graceful presentation that would make it an attractive alternative for those feeling fatigue from the aging visuals of Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source. To new players, it presented something that lacked the welcoming learning curve, well-tuned modes of play, and addictive leveling systems that have become standard across most modern shooters. The event, which took place at London ExCel from Friday October 23rd to Sunday October 25th, drew masses of comic book, anime, gaming and other geeky fans to the show. Numbers aren't confirmed at the time of writing but the past few events drew 110,000 and 122,000 visitors respectively. When many players aren't busy opening or earning skins of their own, they're probably watching someone else open cases. Well-known Twitch streamers and YouTubers have noted the incredible viewership that opening cases and performing skin giveaways brings, and some specialize in opening dozens of cases in a frenzy as viewers hope to witness the acquisition of a rare knife skin, or winning one of their own in a raffle. The CS: GO community has benefited greatly from this microtransaction-oriented addition to the game.
